I've talked about Constantine before, specifically how smartly the movie handles its exposition. But did you know that Constantine was director Francis Lawrence's first feature film ever? Pretty remarkable given the craft on display here. Keanu Reeves gives it his all. The handling of exposition is on point. The CGI still holds up. It's no wonder the movie has become such a cult hit these past years. But today, I specifically want to look at how the film was edited, and how many choices were made in post-production to bring us the version of the movie that we have. Let's dive in.

I really want Francis Lawrence to burst out with something big again. He's got the juice, it's just not concentrated well a lot of the time. Constantine is a minor miracle of a movie - nothing like what you'd expect from a comic book movie then - and that's even more true today. He made one of the best YA adaptations with Catching Fire - a dystopian action/thriller so above the rest even his own follow-us can't match it. I Am Legend is somewhat underappreciated for being the tought, big budget horror spectacle it is - though it was botched with the theatrical ending and the purely CGI monsters. At least the alternate ending available on the physical release of the film keeps the films integrity intact. And I'd say I Am Legend has one of Will Smith's last great performances. The Hunger Games prequel was pretty good, if a bit labored. Red Sparrow is seem as a dud, but it's well shot and has interesting elements to it that is worth your time. I think Lawrence just needs that magical script to inject some new blood into his filmography.

It's a big crime to not drop a single word about sound design here. Is it part of the rhythm? Part of the international, abstract appeal? Ben Burtt is as integral to Star Wars as is John Williams.

If they spent more money the film would be not as good. Poverty has hyped up their humor, laughing with funny improvisations. Not telling the actors what Kafka moment is going to happen! Like the B.Dickus moment with the guards... Lots of whities were soiled while recording for sure! I wish time stood still!

Your essay made me realize that I never truly grasped how Star Wars is a Space *Opera*. The way you built things up, demonstrating everything that is told and shown by everything else but dialog, ending on those Japanese-dubbed b&w versions, and dropping the term like the cherry on top... it made it click. It's almost as if working within the various constraints of music video creation helped this director understand several aspects of how to tell a story, resulting in a concise and well communicated narrative. Skills that transfer well when brought to a longer format film. Zack Snyder seems to have the opposite problem. Given little constraints he keeps churning out meandering, boring nonsense with overly and repeatedly explained story elements, in longer and longer movies. The movie also shows a level of trust in the audience that we don't see in films and series today. I don't know if it's the absence of trust in the audience or the presence of distrust in their own abilities, their ability to troubleshoot and rectify as required, of so many current directors. This makes me worried for Constantine 2.

This made me realize, I'd actually like to see a modern movie made with no dialogue, as a sort of challenge to the director to see how much story they can still get across. And none of these old time pauses for slides with text either, just no words anywhere in the film.
